Community college professors typically teach general-education classes or provide training for a specific career. Full-time professors teach a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester and may add additional classes for a higher salary. In addition to extra classes, other factors might affect the salary range for community college professors.

Average Salary:

The average salary for a full-time professor at a public community college or two-year technical school is $72,000, according to a 2010-11 study published in 2012 in the National Education Association Almanac of Higher Education. This study also found a lower average salary for the same position at independent and private institutions, where the average yearly salary for professors is $54,000.

Education Level:

Salaries for full-time community college professors can vary based on education level. Professors with a doctorate degree earn more than those with a master’s or bachelor’s degree. At Grays Harbor College in Washington state, for example, this amounted to a difference of approximately $10,000, as of publication.

Summer School:

Many community colleges base the salary for professors on the 175-day academic calendar, which typically runs from August through May. It does not include summer school, because not all professors teach summer school. Community college professors who choose to teach during summers earn a higher salary than those who do not. This salary increase can be $10,000 or more depending upon the number of hours and the subject being taught.

Colleges require student clubs and organizations to have a sponsor to serve as an adviser to the group. The sponsor attends meetings, events and other activities of the group while working one-on-one with the officers of the organization. Many colleges provide a stipend per semester or year for professors that serve as sponsors. For example, Big Bend Community College in Washington pays a faculty member approximately $1,800 to serve as the primary adviser for Phi Theta Kappa, an academic honor society. Full-time community college professors who choose to serve as an activities sponsor can earn an even higher yearly salary.
