If you are interested in becoming an engineer, there are several different careers to choose from. There are civil engineers, chemical engineers, nuclear engineers and more. The type of engineer that you decide to become will depend on the type of work that you want to do.

A civil engineer plans, designs and oversees the building of large structures and buildings such as bridges and railroads. A chemical engineer plans and designs chemical plant equipment that handles manufacturing products that contain gasoline, plastics, cement and more. Nuclear engineers work with research and production of nuclear engineering projects for nuclear energy and nuclear waste disposal. While each type of engineer works with different types of materials, they all have similar types of job functions that they will follow. The main job of an engineer works with planning and designing of machines and structures to ensure that all guidelines are being followed. They also oversee the production of these products or machines to ensure that they are built according to the specifications. They estimate costs and present this information to company heads. They may perform experiments or write journals and papers to promote their ideas.

Engineering Salaries:

The engineering salaries will vary depending on the type of engineering that you do. The average salary for a civil engineer is about $77,000 per year. Chemical engineers make an average salary of $92,000 a year. The average engineering salaries for a nuclear engineer is about $101,000 a year. The amount you make will also depend on how much experience you have. The starting engineering salaries are $50,000 a year for a civil engineer, $59,000 per year for a chemical engineer and $67,000 a year for a nuclear engineer. The top engineering salaries are $119,000 per year for a civil engineer, $146,000 a year for a chemical engineer and $147,000 a year for a nuclear engineer. The average engineering wages will depend on several things such as your education also. Engineers that have a doctorate can obtain a much higher engineering income than an engineer that just has a bachelor’s degree.

Engineering Education:

In order to become an engineer, you will need to obtain a bachelor’s degree. There are other options such as an associate’s degree and a master’s degree. But the majority of employers are looking for employees that have at least a bachelor’s degree. More than fifty percent of nuclear engineers, seventy two percent of chemical engineers and eighty six percent of civil engineers have a bachelor’s degree. The time to complete these degrees will vary depending on the program. It can take from two to six years. Courses of study will include several courses in math and science, statistics, engineering mechanics, fluid dynamics, chemistry, biology, chemistry, control of chemicals, biological processes and more. The program will also include classroom work in addition to several hours of lab work. Some practical work may also be required as a part of the degree plan. ABET provides certification for engineers. Licensing exams are available for all types of engineers. This is a two part test that must be taken separately.

Engineering Work Environment:

The work environment for engineering occupations will vary depending on the type of engineer you are, the type of place you work and your job description. Civil engineers work mostly in offices although they will travel to work sites and construction sites to oversee the production of certain structures. Chemical engineers generally work in a laboratory setting although they also may travel to chemical plants and refineries to oversee production. Some may travel may be required as a large part of the job including going oversees to other countries. Nuclear engineers typically work in an office setting. Although this can vary depending on the industry they work in such as electric power generation and technical consulting services. Working as an engineer will require you to be very accurate and pay attention to all of the details involved. The work schedule for most engineers is a full time schedule. However, this will often be more than sixty hours per week especially if they are working on a large or important project. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

There are many different careers that you can choose from in the job market. If you decide that you want to be an engineer you will be a part of a very important part of many people’s every day lives. Not only do they offer great engineering salaries, but it is also a career track that involves a very good job outlook for the future. The job market is expanding in many of the engineering careers. Civil engineers have a nineteen percent increase in jobs, chemical engineers have a six percent increase and nuclear engineers have a ten percent increase expected in the job market. This will create several thousand jobs within the engineering market by 2020.
