Nail technicians are beauty professionals that shape and cut clients toenails and fingernails. They may apply acrylic nails and color and shape them. They may provide other services such as decorations also.

Nail technicians have several jobs duties in addition to providing manicures and pedicures for their clients. They clean and sanitize all the tools that they normally use, they stock their area with new supplies and keep their work environment clean and sterile. The current national average nail technician salary is $22,000 per year or $10 an hour. Many nail technicians may supplement their pay with tips from clients. Pay will greatly depend on the type of place you work, the amount of clients you get, tips, education and experience and much more. The average starting nail technician salary for a tech with little or no experience is about $17,000 per year or an hourly salary of $8. With five years of experience the nail technician wage will increase to $18,000 per year or $9 an hour. The more experience you get and the more clients you bring in the more money you will make. A nail tech with ten or more years of experience will make an hourly salary of $9 or an yearly salary of $19,000. With fifteen years of experience the nail technician salary will increase to $24,000 per year or $12 an hour. The top level of experience is met once you have at least twenty years of experience. At this advanced level of experience the average nail technician salary is $30,000 per year or $14 an hour.

Nail Technician Education:

In order to become a nail technician you will need to complete a state approved cosmetology program. These programs typically take about one year to complete and will result in a certificate. Courses will include in class learning in addition to hands on learning and skills tests. There are more than four hundred and seventy approved courses to choose from. Courses of study will include nail art, composition of nails, principles of nail technology, nail enhancements, manicure and pedicure techniques, principles of nail care, salon practices, salon development, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, advanced design among other topics. Coursework will include hands on learning in which you will get to work with real people to gain valuable experience. Many nail technicians also take courses in sales and communications. Once you graduate from one of these programs you will need to take a state licensed exam. This exam will involve taking and passing a written and practical exam.

Nail Technician Work Environment:

The work environment for a nail technician is typical for most salons or spas. They work at a workstation and often are sitting during most of the work hours. More than sixty percent of nail techs work in the personal services industry. This involves a clean and sterile environment that is well lit and temperature controlled. Protective clothing is often worn in this career due to the use of harmful chemicals. Many nail techs may wear masks, gloves and protective clothing such as scrubs. Nail techs must work quick and accurately to ensure client happiness. The work schedule for a nail technician is typically a normal full time schedule. Some nail technicians may work part time or on an as needed basis. Some are self employed and work from their own homes. However, the hours may vary as many salons and spas are opened for extended hours and on weekends and holidays.

Nail technicians are specialized beauty workers. Many of these technicians have various skills and job duties that they perform. By 2020, there is an expected increase of seventeen percent of new jobs being added to the job market.
